“The Art of Place: Contemporary Asian Art Destinations” is the sixth lecture-luncheon series to be co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Department of Asian art and its affiliate organization, the Asian Art Council. Speakers at the event will touch on various aspects of “place” in Asian cultures, taking into account issues of home, region, and nation alongside artistic significance, as well as subjects such as modernization, urbanization, and environmental change. First up on April 3rd, a talk with Cai Guo-Qiang, a contemporary Chinese artist, who is globally celebrated for utilizing groundbreaking explosive mediums — his most well-known works include aerial firework displays and gunpowder paintings. At the sit-down, a viewing of videos documenting Guo-Qiang’s works will be followed by a conversation between the artist and Colin Mackenzie, curator of Chinese art at the Art Institute of Chicago.
